�Plugging In�

�I�m just one person. How can I make a difference? I mean�. there are so many problems out there. Is there even any point in trying?

The New Testament is quite clear that in ministry, we are not called to the daunting task of changing the world, but rather to extend small acts of love and kindness to our neighbor each and every day of our lives. These seemingly insignificant acts extend beyond ourselves as well as those to whom we minister; their net effect is to cause profound changes in the lives of people we may never know. Christian ministry is grounded in the belief that God is in the multiplication business. Just as Jesus took five loaves and two fish and fed thousands, so too the abundance of His love will multiply and bless our efforts. You may only be one person, but with God, you can accomplish more than you can ever hope or imagine!

Making Contact

Churches are organized into communities of shared purpose. �That�s interesting� you might say, �but what purpose is that?� Each ministry of the church is an expression of how a particular group of people have discovered God in the exercise of their gifts and talents. A choir, for instance, meets God in the singing of music. Their shared purpose is to communicate to others how they have experienced God. They lead the congregation in singing so that the congregation might also experience God. As a result, the community�s knowledge of God is enriched, as we glimpse the ways in which God has touched and blessed others in their various disciplines.

Strange to say, the exercise of our gifts is not about our giftedness. It is not even about sharing those gifts with others. No, it is primarily about making Jesus Christ known to others in and through the joyful offering of those gifts. This is our purpose. It�s why we human beings have been put on earth.

We live in a world that makes many claims on our lives, from the demands of work, to the expectations of society and even the obligations we feel to our loved ones. Frankly, life can be tiring as well as confusing. It�s no wonder we have a tendency to lose our way. Reality is tough.

That�s where the Christian faith comes in. Through faith in God, we can experience true freedom and joy. We can begin to know an abundant life filled with clarity, purpose and love. We become anchored.

The church is not a building. It is not a club. It is not a bunch of committees. It is more, even, than just a community. Simply put, the church is where God meets us and transforms our minds and hearts. In weekly worship we make room for this encounter as we offer our praise and thanksgiving. We leave united in a common purpose to embody the presence and glory of God, in joyful response to the gift of eternal life in Jesus Christ.
